Elon Musk Tweets White Supremacist Meme, Causing Outrage

Billionaire Twitter owner Elon Musk tweeted an image Monday morning which drew condemnation from an antisemitism watch group and social media users due to its known association with white supremacist figures and organizations.

“This meme has become the go to of white supremacists like Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes. Please do not propagate its usage,” the official account for StopAntisemitism tweeted in response.

Musk’s tweet, sent just before 6 a.m. Monday morning, featured a cartoon character known as Pepe the Frog, a symbol many say has been adopted by online members of the so-called alt right community for use in antisemitic messaging, along with the text “honestly, I don’t care about this particular psyop.”

In an emailed statement to the Herald, StopAntisemitism explained their call for Musk to not spread the frog’s image.

“In Elon Musk’s effort to prove how many psyops there are on Twitter, he propagated a known meme that has become the symbol of White Nationalists. StopAntisemitism immediately called out Musk by replying to his tweet to inform him that Pepe the Frog was made popular by Holocaust denier Nick Fuentes,” Liora Rez, Executive Director of StopAntisemitism, said in the statement.

“StopAntisemitism calls on the Twitter owner to delete the dangerous Pepe meme and remove what can be construed as support for White Nationalism,” Rez continued.

Many users of Twitter were not amused by Musk’s use of the Pepe meme.

“Just put a swastika as your profile pic already,” Colorado Rep. Stephen Woodrow said in reply before 11 a.m.

“Trying out Pepe the Frog?” Immigration lawyer David Leopold asked, linking to the ADL’s page on the cartoon.
