A student at Ravena-Coeymans-Selkirk high school was being interviewed by authorities Wednesday about a hateful message scrawled on a bathroom wall.

Superintendent Brian Bailey said information from staff and students as well as surveillance footage helped investigators find the student believed to be behind a message that included a swastika, references to Hitler and racist, anti-Semitic and homophobic slurs.

Bailey said the student took responsibility for the vandalism and the Albany County Sheriff's Office was investigating whether charges will be filed.

The superintendent said he was disappointed someone in the district would write a hate-filled message but he was glad the writer was quickly discovered.

No one, he said, is left to wonder "who is this person and is this person next to me."

The graffiti, a photograph of which was shared with the Times Union, was discovered late Tuesday.

Bailey said an assembly was held at the high school to address the matter at the start of classes Wednesday. Roughly 400 students took part in the assembly and the principal spoke with the district's 11th graders when the arrived in the morning for a previously scheduled class trip.
