Tampa Bar Plastered with Swastikas

Swastikas and other graffiti were recently discovered spray-painted on signs at a coffee shop in South Tampa.

The vandalized signs were discovered Wednesday, Jan. 29 at Spaddy's Coffee Co (6102 S. MacDill Ave.), which is actually a shared location with Raw Smoothie Co. that recently opened last November.

The owners say the coffee shop has been vandalized in the past, but never with racist symbols, and it’s unclear if this most recent incident is related.

Yesterday, Spaddy’s owner Greg Spadaccini posted about the incident in the South of Gandy Community Facebook group, with photos of multiple swastikas painted on signs, as well as the words “Bad,” and “Bad Service.”

“It started with simple vandalization of our signs, but this last one was a little much and has pushed us to reach out to our community for help,” Spadaccini wrote in the post. “We ask our neighbors to keep [an] eye out and if you see anything let us or local police know. Police have been notified!”

Raw Smoothie owner James Rue also posted about the graffiti, stating that it “offensive and uncalled for.”

Tampa Police officers told WFTS that while no motive has been identified, the incident is considered criminal mischief and trespassing.

Over the past few years, Florida has witnessed a steady increase in antisemitic incidents. A 2019 study showed that from 2017 to 2018, Florida registered 197 incidents from extremist groups, 98 of which involved acts of anti-Semitism. Tampa alone was responsible for 22 of those incidents.

Last June, two teenagers were arrested in connection with a swastika that was spray-painted in the parking garage of the Bayshore Regency Condominiums, which is less than one mile from the Jewish Community Center Preschool of South Tampa.
