Police are still investigating after "racist and antisemitic hate speech" was found written in spray paint at the scene of a suspicious fire earlier this week.

The fire was reported in the early morning hours Sunday in a downtown neighborhood, but Appleton police have so far released few details of their investigation, describing only "a serious incident involving a possible arson that damaged a home." No arrests have been made and police have not released any information about a suspect or suspects.

In a Facebook post Friday morning, the Appleton Police Department shared a statement from the victims that says the incident began with a failed break-in attempt by unidentified individuals.

"The perpetrator(s) spray-painted our home, vehicle and property, using racist and antisemitic hate speech," the victims' statement says. "There was a significant fire and explosion caused by this attempt."

Meghan Cash, a spokeswoman for the department, said officers suspected a hate crime may have been involved "based on some of the evidence collected."

"This is unacceptable and will not be tolerated in our city," the department said in the Facebook post. "We are actively investigating this incident as a potential hate crime and will provide additional details when we are able."
