French Woman Arrested after Yelling "Heil Hitler" to Jewish Worshippers on Shabbat

A woman verbally attacked a group of Jewish people on Saturday August 21st in Deuil-la-Barre. According to the Union of Jewish communities of Val-d'Oise (UCJ95), the incident involved a Jewish family who left their synagogue,Enghien-les-Bains, and who returned to their home.

One of the members, Jonathan, 33 , had his white kippah on his head. It was at 5 Rue Eugène Lamarre in Deuil-la-Barre, that they saw a motorist coming out of a parking lot and then reversing to get within earshot of the group. They then hear her say ten times: "Heil Hitler", before adding: "You Jews, you are the shame of France".

Shocked, Jonathan went to lodge a complaint with the Enghien-les-Bains police station. He was able to describe this woman who is European in type, has long, blond hair and appears to be around 40 years old. He was also able to give the type of vehicle and the license plate number that his brother, who was also present at the scene, had noted. Police were able to identify a suspect.

The 58-year-old woman from Enghien-les-Bains was arrested and taken into police custody. According to our information, she admitted to having uttered these words considering that they fall within the scope of freedom of expression.

However, the law provides for up to six months in prison and a fine of 22,500 euros for public insults on the grounds of belonging or not "to a specific ethnicity, nation, race or religion". She was summoned to be tried before the 6th Chamber of the Pontoise Criminal Court on October 26.
