Uruguay Becomes 19th Country to Adopt the IHRA Definition of Antisemitism

The adoption was made this Monday, January 27, date of the International Day of Commemoration in Memory of the Victims of the Holocaust.

Uruguay's accession to the work definition of the International Alliance for the Holocaust Remembrance (IHRA) was announced by the country's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, as part of the international commemoration of the Holocaust.

“Uruguay adheres with conviction to this tribute, adopting the definition of antiדemitism of the International Alliance for the Holocaust Remembrance, an organization that brings together governments and experts from different countries, in order to reinforce, promote and promote worldwide, education, memory and research on the Holocaust and of which Uruguay is an observer member, ”reads a statement from the agency.

The Ministry acknowledged "the increase in abusive expressions and acts of violence directed against members of the Jewish community, including the denial of the Holocaust and other signs of hatred that Uruguay repudiates with the greatest firmness."

The agency says that with a measure like this, the country maintains its fight against all types of discrimination, highlighting the fight "against any kind of hostility and prejudice towards the Jewish community."
