‘Squad’ Rep. Rashida Tlaib Beats Out Hamas Leader for ‘Antisemite of the Year’

“Squad” Rep. Rashida Tlaib has been named 2023’s “Antisemite of the Year” by a nonprofit watchdog for her comments on Israel following Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack — with the Democratic lawmaker beating out an Islamist terror chief and model Gigi Hadid for the title.

“Congresswoman Tlaib’s well-earned dishonor reflects a long history of antisemitism, but her statements in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attack were particularly unconscionable,” StopAntisemitism posted on X Monday.

“She not only victim-blamed Israel, but she also accused it of committing genocide against the Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews through genocide.”

The organization, which says its goal is to expose “groups and individuals that espouse incitement towards the Jewish people and State and engage in antisemitic behaviors,” cited the Michigan Democrat’s ongoing criticism of Israel.

In October, Tlaib faced backlash for incorrectly accusing the Israel Defense Forces of bombing a Gaza hospital, despite evidence showing it was actually struck by a misfired Palestinian Islamic Jihad missile.

The Detroit-born Tlaib, the first Palestinian-American to be elected to Congress, went as far as to call for an independent investigation into the bombing — saying she “cannot uncritically accept Israel’s denials of responsibility as fact.”

“Both the Israeli and United States governments have long, documented histories of misleading the public about wars and war crimes — like last year’s Israeli military assassination of Shireen Abu Akleh and the false claims of weapons of mass destruction that led our country into the Iraq War — and cannot clear themselves of responsibility without an independent international investigation,” she said at the time.

In early November, Tlaib also accused President Biden of supporting the “genocide” of Palestinians and warned in a video posted on X that voters “won’t forget” in 2024.

Just a few days later, she faced criticism online for defending protesters chanting, “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.”

She insisted that the chant was “an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence,” despite the Anti-Defamation League’s assertion that it is a call for the elimination of the state of Israel in its current form between the Jordan River and the Mediterranean Sea, as well as the American-Israeli Public Affairs Committee (AIPAC) saying the phrase reflects a literal call for genocide against Jewish people.

For that defense of the hateful chant, Tlaib was censured by the House of Representatives, with 22 of her follow Democrats voting with 212 Republicans to do so.

It was later revealed that Tlaib is part of a hidden Facebook group that has praised the Hamas jihadists who kidnapped and killed hundreds of civilians in Israel — including at least 39 Americans.

The founder of the group “Palestinian American Congress” has referred to Israelis as not “real Jews” and questioned whether the Holocaust really happened, according to Fox News.

More recently, the “Squad” member raged against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, calling the leader of the Jewish state a “genocidal maniac” in a social media post.

The Post has reached out to Tlaib’s office for comment.

StopAntisemitism gave Tlaib the title over finalists Ismail Haniyeh, the political leader of Hamas, and model Hadid, who falsely claimed in November that Israel was “the only country in the world that keeps children as prisoners of war.”

Executive director Liora Rez told the Jerusalem Post in a statement that all three finalists “showcase the depth and breadth of contemporary antisemitism.”

But in announcing Tlaib as the winner, Rez noted Tlaib’s status as a member of Congress.

“This is a historically dangerous time for American Jews,” she said.

“Amid an explosion in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, we can’t afford to have our elected representatives adding fuel to the fire!”

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib Crowned ‘Antisemite of the Year’ by StopAntisemitism

Representative Rashida Tlaib, a Democrat from Michigan, has been declared ‘Antisemite of the Year’ for 2023 by StopAntisemitism, a leading watchdog group combating antisemitism. The ‘dishonorable award,’ as described by the group, was accorded to Tlaib following a poll participated in by nearly 15,000 individuals, outranking nominees that included Hamas terrorist leader Ismail Haniyeh and influencer Gigi Hadid.

StopAntisemitism cited Tlaib’s history of antisemitic statements, victim-blaming Israel, and making unfounded accusations against the Jewish state as reasons for her selection. Her comments have sparked strong condemnation from her congressional colleagues, leading to her censure by both Republicans and Democrats in the House of Representatives.

The award announcement comes amid rising antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, accentuating the potential harm of Tlaib’s statements. The congresswoman’s rhetoric, including her unjust blame on Israel for the October 7 Hamas attacks, and her advocacy for the removal of Jews from Israel, has only contributed to the growing concerns among American Jews.

Tlaib has been in the spotlight for her use of the phrase ‘from the river to the sea,’ which is often interpreted as calling for the elimination of Israel. She has also falsely accused the Israel Defense Forces of bombing a hospital. Furthermore, she recently took to Instagram to label Prime Minister Netanyahu a ‘genocidal maniac.’ The severity of her remarks and the controversy they have stirred have made her the recipient of this ‘dishonorable award.’

Rashida Tlaib Crowned ‘Antisemite of the Year’ 2023 by StopAntisemitism

The 2023 award for ‘Antisemite of the Year’ was gifted to Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib by StopAntisemitism. As antisemitism rose internationally after Hamas’s October 7 attack, the congresswoman beat some fierce competition all seemingly vying for the top spot. Tlaib beat Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and Supermodel and Influencer Gigi Hadid.

Tlaib, who represents the 12th district, won the title after 15,000 people casted their votes.

As the fifth crowned Antisemite of the Year, Tlaib follows in the footsteps of Kanye West (2022) and Anuradha Mittal, the head of Ben & Jerry’s board of directors and vice president of Ben & Jerry’s Foundation Inc. (2021).

“Rep. Tlaib’s well-earned title reflects a long history of antisemitism, but her statements in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 attacks were particularly unconscionable,” said StopAntisemitism Executive Director Liora Rez. “Tlaib not only victim-blamed Israel, but she also accused it of committing genocide against the Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews and genocide.”

“This is a historically dangerous time for American Jews,” said Rez. “Amid an explosion in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, we can’t afford to have our elected representatives adding fuel to the fire.”

Tlaib has now become one of only 26 congresspeople to be formally censured, according to StopAntisemitism. Tlaib was censured after she blamed Hamas’s attack on Israel on Israel.

The congresswoman, in July, became one of only 9 members of Congress to vote against a bill that asserted that Israel is not a racist or apartheid state. That same bill also expressed Congress’ rejection of all forms of antisemitism and xenophobia.

Adding to her list of false claims, Tlaib falsely spread the claim that Israel had conducted an airstrike on a Gazan hospital. The strike in question had been carried out by a failed missile launch by Palestinian Islamic Jihad. Even after the United States confirmed that PIJ had been behind the hospital blast, Tlaib continued to spread false claims that Israel was committing genocide.

In November, Tlaib’s claims escalated to the point she made a video accusing US Joe Biden of supporting “the genocide of the Palestinian people” and calling for a ceasefire. She has vilified Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “genocidal maniac” and criticized the US for funding “massacres” in Gaza.

While Tlaib has accused Israel of genocide repeatedly, many have criticized her for defending the slogan “From the river to the sea, Palestine will be free.” The slogan claims that a Palestinian state would fall between the Mediterranean Sea to the Jordan River, meaning the entire state of Israel would be wiped off the map. This slogan is thought to advocate for a single-state solution and many consider it genocidal.

Tlaib denied that the slogan was problematic, instead posting on X that “From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”

Here's Who Was Just Named the '2023 AntiSemite of the Year'

On Monday night, Stop Antisemitism awarded Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) the title of "2023 Antisemite of the Year." She even beat out Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh for the top spot, as well as supermodel Gigi Hadid. A press release noted that the results came after nearly 15,000 people voted in an online poll.

Included in a pinned post from the organization's X account is a 90-second video highlighting the Squad member's worst moments of antisemitism from the past year in response to Hamas perpetrating the October 7 terrorist attack on Israel, though it also details how there's plenty of examples from previous years as well. The video referred to Tlaib as "the disgraced Congresswoman," and said that earning the crown was "long overdue."

For example, upon taking office in 2019, Tlaib replaced Israel on a map with "Palestine." She was also barred from entering Israel due to her support for the Boycott, Divestment and Sanctions (BDS) movement against Israel, with Stop Antisemitism highlighting how she shared an antisemitic post as a result.

Then there's her "shameful antisemitic voting record," which included defending BDS in 2019 and "invoking the antisemitic trope of dual loyalty." She's also voted against Iron dome funding, after making antisemitic remarks that were criticized by fellow Democrat, then Rep. Ted Deutch from Florida. Last year, before the October 7 attack, she voted against a resolution making clear that Israel was not a racist or apartheid state, necessitated by Rep. Pramila Jayapal's (D-WA) claims that Israel was in fact those things. The resolution also condemned all forms of xenophobia.

The video then reminds viewers of the horrors that occurred on October 7, of how 1,200 Israelis were "savagely murdered" by Hamas, most of them civilians. Hamas targeted men, women, and children in unspeakable ways, not even sparing Holocaust survivors or babies. In addition to murder, Hamas tortured, kidnapped, and raped their victims, which is also mentioned in the video.

Stop Antisemitism notes how Tlaib voted against a resolution that condemned Hamas and reaffirmed assistance to Israel, and that she "blamed Israel and falsely accused them of hospital bombings," despite how they were the result of misfired terrorist rockets. Tlaib doubled down on her false narrative in a repost over X, as well as in hysterical remarks outside of the Capitol, with pro-Hamas agitators illegally occupying the Cannon House building not long after. She didn't issue an acknowledgment about the false narrative until over a week later, but, as the Stop Antisemitism video points out, the post is still up.

It gets worse from there, though, as Tlaib was not only featured in a video ad that included pro-Hamas agitators in her state of Michigan chanting "from the river to the sea," but she herself later shared it to call out President Joe Biden and then engaged in a ridiculous defense of the genocidal phrase. Stop Antisemitism was among those accounts calling her out for such a post, which is also still up.

The congresswoman was eventually censured by the House in a bipartisan vote after repeating such false narratives and for her defense of the genocidal phrase. Tlaib played the victim throughout.

Let's not also forget, though, how Tlaib had also failed to properly respond to the Octoober 7 attack in a timely manner, and additionally ignored reporters who asked her if she condemned the beheading of babies, and scoffed at those who tried to get her to speak to her false narratives.

Her antisemitism and anti-Israel sentiments were also on display last May when she held an event regarding Israel's founding as a "Nakba," or "catastrophe," around the time of its 75th anniversary. The event took place thanks to Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-VT) in the committee room for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor and Pensions (HELP), which Sanders chairs. He did so without consulting or even informing Ranking Member Bill Cassidy (R-LA), who expressed outrage. Sanders made his move after then Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA) had blocked the event from being held at the Capitol.

While it might seem stunning that a sitting U.S. congresswoman would beat out a leader of Hamas, the title for Tlaib is well-earned here. Even before the October 7 attack she's been particularly bold and unapologetic about her anti-Israel stance, as she's taken it upon herself to brag about, including how she got other Democrats to oppose funding the Iron dome in past years.

As the video made clear, this achievement been a long time coming.

Rashida Tlaib Named Antisemite of the Year

Congresswoman (D-MI) Rashida Tlaib, a member of the far-left ‘Squad,’ was named Antisemite of the Year this week by the organization Stop Antisemitism.

Last year’s “winner” was Kanye West and for 2023, Tlaib managed to get the top rating beating out Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh and supermodel Gigi Hadid.

In an X post, Stop Antisemitism acknowledged that Tlaib was presented with a “well-deserved dishonor” for her various offenses.

The congresswoman had already been notorious for her vocal and consistently negative criticism of Israel and its leaders, but her remarks and behavior following the Hamas massacre on October 7th, the most severe murder of Jews in a single day since the Holocaust, made her the most deserving recipient of the dishonor.

Tlaib blamed Israel for the October 7th atrocities committed by Hamas and early in the conflict accused Israel of genocide against Palestinians.

Before the events of October 7th, Tlaib voted against a bill that said Israel is not an apartheid state and refused to condemn antisemitism.

Tlaib falsely accused Israel of blowing up a hospital in Gaza, and even after it was proven the explosion was caused by Palestinian terrorists, the congresswoman refused to correct her statements after the fact.

On November 3rd, Rashida Tlaib called for an immediate ceasefire without any mention of returning hostages to Israel or condemning Hamas, and she accused President Biden of being complicit in “the genocide of the Palestinian people.”

She even doubled down on using the expression “From the River to the Sea” which calls for the destruction of Israel.

Tlaib posted on X, “From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”

In early November, both Democrats and Republicans voted for an official censure of Rashida Tlaib for her remarks, and she became only the 26th member of Congress to receive this demerit.

Rashida Tlaib Named ‘Antisemite of the Year’ for 2023 by Watchdog Group

Leading antisemitism watchdog group StopAntisemitism has named US Rep. Rashida Tlaib (D-MI) as 2023’s “Antisemite of the Year,” a damning assessment of her public remarks about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and, most notably, Hamas’ massacre across southern Israel on Oct. 7.

“Congresswoman Tlaib’s well-earned dishonor reflects a long history of antisemitism, but her statements in the wake of Hamas’ Oct. 7 attacks were particularly unconscionable,” StopAntisemitism said on Monday while announcing Tlaib’s election by a public vote. “She not only victim-blamed Israel, but she also accused it of committing genocide against the Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews through genocide.”

StopAntisemitism cited several reasons why voters selected Tlaib, who joins rapper Kanye West on the group’s list of prominent figures to “win” the distinction.

After Hamas’ onslaught, in which Palestinian terrorists murdered 1,200 people and kidnapped 240 others as hostages, Tlaib flew a Palestinian flag outside her home and seemingly blamed Israel for the attack, accusing the Jewish state of having an “apartheid system” that fosters “conditions that can lead to resistance.” Later, the lawmaker accused US President Joe Biden of supporting a “genocide” against Palestinians because he voiced support for Israel’s right to defend itself.

In the following weeks, Tlaib falsely claimed on social media that Israel bombed the Al Ahli Hospital in Gaza as part of its military operations targeting Hamas, which rules the coastal Palestinian enclave. It turned out that a misfired Palestinian rocket from Gaza caused a widely reported explosion near the Al Ahli Hospital, according to intelligence from Israel and several Western governments. Experts agreed that Israel was not responsible, but Tlaib refused to recant her claim, arguing that “both the Israeli and United States governments have long, documented histories of misleading the public about wars and war crimes.”

So indecorous was Tlaib’s conduct that in November her colleagues in the US House of Representatives voted to censure  her for  “promoting false narratives” regarding Hamas’ Oct. 7 invasion of the Jewish state and of “calling for the destruction of the state of Israel.”

Tlaib was also prevented that month from speaking on a college campus after Arizona State University canceled an event that its Students for Justice in Palestine (SJP) chapter helped organize.

“This is a historically dangerous time for American Jews,” StopAntisemitism added in Monday’s announcement. “Amid an explosion in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, we can’t afford to have our elected representatives adding fuel to the fire.”

Tlaib beat out Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh, among others, to be named StopAntisemitism’s “top antisemite” for 2023.

U.S. Rep. Rashida Tlaib Named "Antisemite of the Year" by StopAntisemitism Organization

Michigan Democratic Representative Rashida Tlaib has been awarded the title of "Antisemite of the Year" by the StopAntisemitism organization.

This designation comes in response to her statements, particularly following the October 7 attacks initiated by Hamas, which the organization has labeled as “particularly unconscionable.”

Liora Rez, the executive director of StopAntisemitism, emphasized Tlaib’s history of antisemitic remarks and highlighted her recent accusations against Israel of committing genocide against Palestinians. Rez condemned Tlaib for defending calls for the ethnic cleansing of Jews in Israel and labeled the representative’s statements as contributing to the dangerous rise of antisemitic incidents in America.

This year’s award places Tlaib among previous recipients, including rapper Kanye West, marking her as the fifth individual to receive this ignominious distinction. Tlaib’s history of criticizing Israel's policies and her statements following the October attacks have fueled controversy. Notably, she criticized the U.S. for providing financial support to what she termed the "apartheid government" of Israel.

The representative faced criticism for her repeated use of the phrase "from the river to the sea," which many interpreted as an implicit call for the destruction of Israel, despite her insistence that it represented Palestinian freedom. Tlaib also faced backlash for incorrectly accusing the IDF of bombing a Gaza hospital, which was actually struck by an Islamic Jihad rocket.

Furthermore, the House of Representatives censured Tlaib in November for her anti-Israel statements. Ending 2023 on a controversial note, she labeled Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "genocidal maniac" in an Instagram post in late December, further escalating tensions surrounding her rhetoric.

Tlaib's remarks and accusations have continued to provoke debate and stir controversy, with critics and organizations like StopAntisemitism condemning her statements as contributing to the rise of antisemitic sentiments.

Rashida Tlaib Beats Out Hamas Leader for 2023 Antisemite of the Year Title

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, Michigan Democrat, was declared “Antisemite of the Year” in the pro-Jewish group StopAntisemitism’s annual poll, beating out Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh.

Ms. Tlaib was the top vote-getter in the online poll that drew more than 15,000 votes. Supermodel Gigi Hadid was the other of the three finalists.

StopAntisemitism called the award “long overdue.”

“Rep. Tlaib’s well-earned title reflects a long history of antisemitism, but her statements in the wake of Hamas’s October 7 attacks were particularly unconscionable,” said StopAntisemitism executive director Liora Rez.

“Tlaib not only victim-blamed Israel, but she also accused it of committing genocide against the Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews and genocide,” Ms. Rez said.

In an Oct. 8 statement, Ms. Tlaib blasted the “apartheid government” of Israel and called for “lifting the blockade, ending the occupation, and dismantling the apartheid system that creates the suffocating, dehumanizing conditions that can lead to resistance.”

More than 1,200 Israeli civilians were killed in the surprise attack by Hamas, which prompted the Israeli counterattack.

Ms. Tlaib was censured by the House on Nov. 7 by a 234-188 vote, “becoming only the 26th member of the House of Representatives in U.S. history to be censured by her peers,” said the StopAntisemitism press release.

Afterward, she said, “I’m the only Palestinian American serving in Congress, Mr. Chair, and my perspective is needed here now more than ever. I will not be silenced, and I will not let you distort my words.”

The group’s 2022 Antisemite of the Year was rapper Kanye West. Previous “winners” include Anuradha Mittal, chair of the Ben & Jerry’s board of directors; Palestinian activist Nerdeen Kiswani; and Rep. Ilhan Omar, Minnesota Democrat.

Ms. Tlaib had no immediate public comment on the award.

Rashida Tlaib Beats Hamas Leader for 'Antisemite of the Year'

The pro-Israel organization StopAntisemitism voted Representative Rashida Tlaib as its 2023 "Antisemite of the Year" on Monday over Hamas chief Ismail Haniyeh amid the ongoing Israel-Hamas war.

Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat who is the only Palestinian-American to serve in Congress, has faced criticism over her stance on Israel amid the conflict and has called for a ceasefire. The conflict has left over 20,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis dead since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel in turn launched a ground invasion of Gaza, a territory that is home to roughly 2 million people.

Critics say Tlaib's statements responding to the attack, as well calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas, are antisemitic, arguing she has opposed Israel's right to exist. Supporters, however, view those criticisms as an attempt to deflect from her opposition to the way the Israeli government has treated Palestinian civilians amid the conflict.

StopAntisemitism, a group that says its goal is to expose "groups and individuals that espouse incitement towards the Jewish people and State and engage in antisemitic behaviors," named her its "Antisemite of the Year," the organization announced Monday.

Liora Rez, StopAntisemitism's executive director, wrote in a statement that Tlaib's title "reflects a long history of antisemitism," adding that her statements to Hamas' attack was "unconscionable."

"Tlaib not only victim-blamed Israel, but she also accused it of committing genocide against the Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews and genocide," she wrote.

Newsweek reached out to Tlaib's office for comment via email.

The organization notably gave the title to Tlaib over Haniyeh, the top political leader of Hamas, and other members of the militant group that led the deadly attack against Israel. In justifying its decision, the group pointed to several of Tlaib's remarks, including her calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a "genocidal maniac" and critiques of U.S. funding for Israel.

It also highlighted her use of the chant, "from the river to the sea." The congresswoman posted a video that featured the phrase to X, formerly Twitter, in November, drawing rebuke that culminated in her being censured by the House of Representatives.

The chant has different meanings for different groups. Tlaib has described it as an "aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate."

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy group that combats antisemitism, defines it as "a call for a Palestinian state extending from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean Sea, territory that includes the State of Israel, which would mean the dismantling of the Jewish state."

Haniyeh and model Gigi Hadid were among the other figures to receive the most votes, according to the organization. Nearly 15,000 people voted in the group's poll. Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, who previously posted to social media that he was "going death con [Defcon] 3 on Jewish people," received the title in 2022.

Rashida Tlaib Slams Hamas Leader as ‘Antisemitic of the Year’

The pro-Israel organization StopAntisemitism on Monday chose Rep. Rashida Tlaib as its 2023 “Anti-Semitic of the Year,” defeating Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh as the war between Israel and Hamas continues.

Tlaib, a Michigan Democrat who is the only Palestinian American in Congress, has been criticized for her stance on Israel in the conflict and called for a ceasefire. The conflict has cost the lives of over 20,000 Palestinians and 1,200 Israelis since Hamas attacked Israel on October 7, 2023. Israel, in turn, launched a ground invasion of Gaza, an area home to about 2 million people.

Critics consider Tlaib’s comments in response to the attack and her calls for a ceasefire between Israel and Hamas to be antisemitic and argue that she spoke out against Israel’s right to exist. But advocates see these criticisms as an attempt to distract from their opposition to the way the Israeli government has treated Palestinian civilians during the conflict.

StopAntisemitism, a group whose goal is to “expose groups and individuals who engage in incitement against the Jewish people and the Jewish state and engage in antisemitic behavior,” named her “Antisemitic of the Year,” the organization said Monday announced.

Liora Rez, executive director of StopAntisemitism, wrote in a statement that Tlaib’s title “reflects a long history of anti-Semitism” and added that her comments about the Hamas attack were “unconscionable.”

“Tlaib not only victimized Israel, but also accused it of committing genocide against Palestinians and continues to defend calls to ethnically cleanse Israel of Jews and genocide,” she wrote.

Newsweek emailed Tlaib’s office seeking comment.

The organization specifically awarded the title to Tlaib over Haniyeh, Hamas’ top political leader, and other members of the militant group that led the deadly attack against Israel. In justifying its decision, the group pointed to several of Tlaib’s statements, including her calling Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu a “genocidal maniac” and criticism of U.S. funding for Israel.

It also highlighted her use of the “river to sea” chant. The congresswoman posted a video using the phrase on X, formerly Twitter, in November, sparking rebukes that culminated in a reprimand from the House of Representatives.

Singing has different meanings for different groups. Tlaib described it as an “ambitious call for freedom, human rights and peaceful coexistence, not for death, destruction or hatred.”

The Anti-Defamation League (ADL), a Jewish advocacy group that combats antisemitism, defines it as “a call for a Palestinian state stretching from the Jordan River to the Mediterranean, an area that includes the State of Israel, meaning dissolution “would.” of the Jewish state.”

According to the organization, Haniyeh and model Gigi Hadid were among the other celebrities who received the most votes. Nearly 15,000 people voted in the group’s poll. Ye, the artist formerly known as Kanye West, previously posted on social media that he was “going on a death scam.” [Defcon] 3 about the Jewish people” received the title in 2022.

Rep. Rashida Tlaib Named 'Antisemite of the Year' Over Hamas Terroist Leader Ismail Haniyeh

Rep. Rashida Tlaib, D-Mich., has been named “Antisemite of the Year” by StopAntisemitism, the group announced Monday.

The group, which describes the accolade as a “dishonorable award,” selected Rep. Tlaib above Hamas terrorist leader Ismail Haniyeh and influencer Gigi Hadid.

Rep. Marjorie Taylore Greene, R-Ga., in November referred to Rep. Tlaib as “terrorist Tlaib” after she was involved in a passionate speech before ceasefire protesters on Capitol grounds. The group later entered the Capitol to protest without authorization.

Rep. Tlaib in November was censured by the House for her rhetoric about the Israel-Hamas war. The representative had used the term “from the river to the sea,” which Jewish activist groups consider hate speech because it implies the eradication of Israel.

She later referred to Israel Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “genocidal maniac,” while condemning fellow members of Congress who met with him.

StopAntisemitism has been leading the charge against Hamas sympathizers and anti-Israel activists in the U.S. since the beginning of the war. In November, the group blasted Emory University’s Dr. Abeer AbouYabis for voicing support for Hamas terrorists on Facebook.

The group also slammed Mika Tosca of School of the Art Institute of Chicago for saying “Israelis are pigs. Savages. Very very bad people.”

Rep. Tlaib's office did not respond to a request for comment from The National Desk Monday.

Rashida Tlaib Named 2023 ‘Antisemite of the Year’ by StopAntisemitism

Congresswoman Rashida Tlaib (D-Mich.) has been named 2023’s “Antisemite of the Year” by the watchdog group StopAntisemitism. After a poll in which nearly 15,000 people voted, Tlaib beat out Hamas senior leader Ismail Haniyeh and supermodel Gigi Hadid for the title. Tlaib inherits the title from 2022 “Antisemite of the Year,” Kanye West.

In July, Tlaib and eight other members of Congress voted against a bill asserting that Israel is not a racist or apartheid state. The proposed legislation further expressed Congress’ rejection of all forms of antisemitism and xenophobia.

Tlaib blamed Hamas’s Oct. 7 massacre on Israel and falsely accused the Jewish state of bombing a hospital, an incident later proven to be the result of a failed rocket launch by Palestinian terrorists. Despite the evidence, Tlaib persisted in her attacks against Israel, including endorsing false and incendiary claims of genocide.

On Nov. 3, she released a video accusing U.S. President Biden of supporting “the genocide of the Palestinian people” and calling for a ceasefire.

She has vilified Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a “genocidal maniac” and criticized the United States for funding “massacres.”

Tlaib has tweeted the lie that “From the river to the sea is an aspirational call for freedom, human rights, and peaceful coexistence, not death, destruction, or hate.”

Her record of antisemitic statements has been appropriately condemned by her congressional colleagues. Exactly one month after the Hamas terrorist attacks, Tlaib was censured for her remarks by both Republicans and Democrats, becoming only the 26th member of the House of Representatives in U.S. history to be censured by her peers.

“This is a historically dangerous time for American Jews,” said Rez. “Amid an explosion in antisemitic incidents and hate crimes, we can’t afford to have our elected representatives adding fuel to the fire.”

How Watermelon Got on Jenn Garner’s Daughter’s Sweatshirt as a Palestinian Nationalism Symbol

When the social media watchdog group StopAntisemitism this week posted a photo of Jennifer Garner’s daughter, it called attention to her sweater, which showed a watermelon cut into the shape of a map.

The group took offense at the map — meant to display the shape of Palestine — saying that it “erases the entire country of Israel,” envisioning a Palestinian state in the territory that now encompasses Israel, the West Bank and Gaza.

StopAntisemitism was mocked by many users for raising alarm over a picture of fruit. But the sweater featured one of many graphics that have established watermelons as a symbol of Palestinian nationalism that dates back decades and has seen a resurgence during Israel’s ongoing war with Hamas in Gaza.

Watermelons are linked with Palestinian activism because their colors — red, black, white and green — match the colors of the Palestinian flag. That symbol became widespread during the decades when Israel banned the waving of the Palestinian flag in Gaza and the West Bank. In lieu of the banner, Palestinians would use pictures of watermelons “as a metaphor for the Palestinian flag and to circumvent the ban,” prominent Palestinian artist Khaled Hourani, who was in his 20s when the first intifada began in 1987, told the Washington Post in 2021.

“The watermelon, which was a common crop in the region, became a symbol of political opposition,” reads a recent blog post from Beeri Printing Press, a prestigious Israeli imprint located on Kibbutz Beeri, the site of a massacre by Hamas on Oct. 7.  “And so, in place of Palestinian flags, in Gaza and the [West] Bank they drew graffiti and made the watermelon an artistic expression. Where there were no flags, there would be watermelons.”

In the 1980s, Sliman Mansour, a Palestinian artist, reportedly had an exhibition shut down by the Israeli military because the works featured the colors of the Palestinian flag. Mansour has recalled in subsequent years that the officer told him even a picture of a watermelon would be illegal. According to the New York Times, Mansour included a painting of a watermelon in a 1987 book of Palestinian folk tales.

Israel allowed the display of the Palestinian flag after the Oslo peace accords in 1993, and contentions over their display receded. But the symbol experienced a revival earlier last year, before the war broke out, when Itamar Ben-Gvir, Israel’s far right minister of national security, attempted to ban public displays of the Palestinian flag as the country was being convulsed with protests against far-reaching judicial reforms proposed by the government.

In June, the Israeli activist group Zazim purchased advertisements on shared taxis in Tel Aviv that displayed a watermelon alongside the text “This is not a Palestinian flag.”

Watermelon depictions have proliferated since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7, and the watermelon emoji has become a signifier of pro-Palestinian sympathies on social media over the last three months. The symbol has in turn sparked controversy for its offensive meaning in another context.

The New York chapter of the Democratic Socialists of America used it on a poster to call out the pro-Israel position of US Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, the New York Democrat who is the minority leader in the US House of Representatives.

“Hakeem Jeffries’ constituents demand ceasefire now!” said the poster, with a depiction of a huge watermelon slice, calling for a November 17 rally.

That backfired: The fruit is seen as a bigoted reference to Black Americans, something Jeffries’ spokesman seized upon.

“The watermelon has long been deployed as a dehumanizing racist trope by white supremacists in America,” Andy Eicher told the New York Post. “In connection with the planned rally targeting our district office, the use of racially inflammatory imagery should come as no surprise given the role NYC-DSA and other gentrifiers have played in aggressively attacking Black elected officials.”

How the Watermelon Wound Up as a Symbol of Palestinian Nationalism

In June, the Israeli activist group Zazim purchased advertisements on shared taxis in Tel Aviv that displayed a watermelon alongside the text “This is not a Palestinian flag.”

Watermelon depictions have proliferated since the outbreak of the Israel-Hamas war on October 7 when some 3,000 Hamas terrorists surged across the Gaza border into Israel, killing some 1,200 people, most of them civilians, and taking another 240 hostages.

And the watermelon emoji has become a signifier of pro-Palestinian sympathies on social media over the last three months.

Jewish Teen Wearing IDF Jacket Screamed at by Stranger in NJ Mall, Called ‘White Piece of S–t’: ‘Horrific’

A Jewish family is speaking out after their teen daughter faced antisemitic harassment for wearing an Israel Defense Forces (IDF) jacket to a New Jersey mall.

In the incident caught on video at American Dream in East Rutherford, Palestinian supporters are seen shouting expletive-laced messages while accusing Maya Vaxman-Magid of “supporting genocide.”

“You should be embarrassed,” one unidentified harasser shouted, going on to call the teen a “White piece of s–t” while declaring she is from Palestine and is “proud to say it.”

“I’ve been yelled at before by people in school and just random people, but it’s never turned violent. It’s never been this aggressive,” Vaxman-Magid told “Fox & Friends First” on Thursday.

“It was pretty scary,” she continued. “Me and my mom, we were both shaking. It wasn’t fun.”

The jacket was a gift from the teen’s grandfather, the family said.

Vaxman-Magid told co-host Todd Piro the incident has affected her in some ways since, saying she has been sleeping less and has been stressed.

“But it’s okay. It’s happened before to me,” she added.

Maya’s mother Adi Vaxman also joined the show to discuss the incident along with Liora Rez, director at the non-profit watchdog StopAntisemitism, who first shared video of the incident.

Vaxman, who was raised by Holocaust survivors, said they made her proud to be Jewish and people should be allowed to wear what they want in public without being attacked.

“I was very surprised. I was upset. My daughter was attacked out of the blue,” she said. “We were just walking and they just came at us behind us. We didn’t even see them. It was very unpleasant. It was scary, and it was a testament of what’s happening in the country lately.

“We feel that as Americans, we need to decide if we’re going to be a civilized culture or a savage, barbaric culture and allow for certain groups in the name of free speech to harass other people, to bully other people, to terrorize people in public spaces. That’s not okay. Nobody should be subject to that.”

Rez agreed, calling the incident “mind-boggling” and “horrific,” sounding the alarm about similar rhetoric and vitriol infiltrating other parts of American culture, including college campuses and social media.

The Vaxman family intends to press charges following the incident and hopes there will be consequences for the perpetrators’ behavior.

Jewish Teen Assaulted, Called ‘W****’ in US Mall for Wearing IDF Sweater

A 16-year-old Jewish teenager was shopping with her family at a mall in New Jersey when she was accosted by pro-Palestinian protesters, the Jewish Chronicle and Daily Mail reported on 2 January. The girl had been wearing an IDF sweatshirt at the time, a popular clothing item often worn by teens returning from a gap year or trip to Israel, which could be the reason she was targeted with the abuse.

The teenager, who was with her parents and 12-year-old sibling, was pushed at the American Dream Mall in East Rutherford. The attacker shouted “You're a w****, your mother is a w****, your grandmother is a w****" and yelled "free Palestine," the JC reported.

The father attempted to break the attacker’s contact with his daughter, pushing her away, and the mother stressed “You’re cursing my child.” The mother asked the woman, “Have you ever been [to Israel?]” The attacker eventually responds “I am from Palestine” in an American accent as she continues to curse at the family and scream.

The American Dream Mall is known for having kosher dining options and being a location frequented often by local Orthodox Jewry.

The incident has inspired concerns for locals, as one X user expressed, “American dream mall is about 10 minutes away from my house, makes me sick to know people like this exist near me. I don’t care if you’re a Jew or a Muslim, you have no right to assault people you disagree with. Hope these 2 are identified by law enforcement as they present a real danger to civilians.”

Another social media user wrote “I’ve been to this mall a dozen times. It’s frequented by a lot of religious Jews. Since October 7th, I avoid wearing a kippah in public and didn’t wear it when I was at this mall two weeks ago.”
