Gang of Teens Deface Multiple New York Buildings with Antisemitic and Pro-Hamas Messages

Four boys took to the roofs of a handful of Yorkville buildings to spray after school antisemitic messages of hate, including a swastika, according to police and reports.

On Oct. 9 at about 5:20 p.m., the gang of four scaled four buildings near East 85th Street and Third Avenue and spray painted antisemitic graffiti on their rooftops, police officials said.

The group's hate-filled antisemitic messages reportedly included swastikas and the word "Hamas," according to the Daily News, just days after the cited group brutally killed at least 1,400 people in Israel.

This wasn't the first time that week that the disturbing Nazi symbol had been marked on an Upper East Side building.

Just a day after the four teens took to the rooftops, a swastika was found scrawled outside of the kosher 2nd Avenue Deli.

Police said they are investigating the newly reported antisemitism as a hate crime.

Jewish Ohio State Students Hospitalized After Antisemitic Assault

Two Ohio State students were assaulted and a Jewish center near campus was vandalized in what the university is calling two targeted acts against the Jewish community.

Early Friday morning, two students were assaulted in the 1800 block of North High Street.
According to a public safety notice from Ohio State, the two students were approached by two unknown males.

A report says the suspects yelled a derogatory term and assaulted the two students while asking if they were Jewish. One of the victims was treated at the Ohio State University Wexner Medical Center and released. The notice did not provide details on the second student's injuries.

According to the university, the assault is "classified by the Clery Act as a hate crime motivated by bias against the Jewish community."

Interim Ohio State president Peter Mohler said the university's thoughts are with the students and their families and they're offering assistance.

In what is believed to be a separate incident, police are also looking for two women accused of vandalizing the Ohio State Hillel Wexner Jewish Student Center on Thursday.

According to police, two women went into the center, located on East 16th Avenue, around 1 p.m. saying they wanted to look around. The building is secured and the front desk let them in.

One woman stood by the front door while the other went into a room and began taking small Israeli flags. When staff confronted the woman, she ran out the door cursing at them, "you support genocide", and "free Palestine" while running to a waiting car, police said. The woman dropped the flags and got into the car with the other woman. A man in the car drove them away.

The center posted on Facebook saying cameras inside the building captured video of the incident, which has been turned over to police.

"The safety of our students and staff is our highest priority – first, foremost, and always," the center said. "We continue to be here for our students, and their physical and emotional safety remains top priority."

Mohler condemned both acts, saying "the university has no tolerance for acts of hatred or violence. Antisemitism is despicable and has no place in our community. The university will pursue all action possible against anyone committing hate crimes on or near our campus."

Ohio Gov. Mike DeWine issued a statement about the incidents at Ohio State, saying, in part, "We will not tolerate hate and violence on our college campuses or anywhere in Ohio. These are despicable acts, and as Governor, I will ensure that the State continues our efforts to protect all Ohio students."

DeWine said he instructed the Ohio State Highway Patrol to coordinate with the Ohio State University Police Department and the Columbus Police Division of Police to provide extra patrols in the campus area.

North Carolina Apartment Complex Defaced with Nazi Imagery

Tenants in buildings on the 100 block of Person Street woke up Thursday morning to a troubling scene — swastikas and offensive phrases graffitied on exterior building walls facing 133 Person St., including an apartment building and an abandoned hair salon.

A resident in the vandalized apartment building also discovered a swastika on their door just before midnight on Wednesday, a police report confirms.

The vandalism occurred in a particularly visible area downtown less than a block from the Market House.

“With regards to the code enforcement, a field report was made, no citation was issued and the city will follow up on Monday,” Fayetteville’s Communications Director Loren Bymer told CityView in a text message Thursday.

Bymer indicated the graffiti wouldn’t be removed immediately, since city staff did not yet “have all those facts” required to determine whether the city or the building owner was responsible for cleaning it up. (CityView publisher Tony Chavonne is the owner of one of the vandalized properties.)

The resident whose door was graffitied, and who requested anonymity, suspects that the incident occurred between 9 p.m. and 11:45 p.m. Wednesday. They immediately called the police after seeing the swastika, and the incident is documented in a police report.

“It was very alarming,” the person said. “I'm not Jewish, but I have a lot of friends that are. It’s just a scary thing to come home to and obviously upsetting. So hopefully they figure it out.”

The graffiti comes at a time when federal officials have warned of increasing hate crimes against Arab, Jewish and Muslim communities amid the war in Gaza. FBI Director Christopher Wray said that antisemitism in the U.S. is reaching “historic levels” in the wake of violence in Israel and Gaza.

The owner hired a worker to paint over the graffiti, but the swastikas and offensive phrases remained in the alleyway as of Thursday evening. Security cameras of businesses surrounding the buildings did not appear to capture the incidents, according to several owners with shops facing the lot.

Neighbors also said a man’s vehicle across the street from the buildings was vandalized with graffiti Wednesday night, and a case in the police department’s mapping portal confirms an incident of vandalism was reported in that location Thursday, though no report exists in the public database in reference to the case number.

Fayetteville Police Department Public Information Officer Rickelle Harrell said Thursday morning she was not aware of the graffiti in response to a CityView inquiry. By Thursday evening, Harrell confirmed that a report did exist, and CityView was able to acquire it by cross-referencing the case number of the incident in the department’s crime mapping database. The report only references the vandalism on a single occupation dwelling, and does not pertain to the extensive graffiti on the sides of the buildings.

The police report states the case involving the resident’s door will be investigated further.

Maryland College Defaced with Violent Antisemitic Messages

The University of Maryland is investigating who is responsible for a series of antisemitic messages discovered after students held a demonstration protesting the Israel-Hamas war.

A group called Students for Justice in Palestine gathered on campus Thursday and called for a ceasfire in Gaza.

At some point during the protest, someone, or a group of people, used chalk to write messages on the sidewalks.

Cell phone photos show messages that include political statements like "stop genocide" and "save Gaza (not from Hamas from Israel)."

Other messages, however, invoked the Holocaust, ethnic cleansing and appeared to target all Jews, rather than the Israeli government.

It's unclear at this time what other messages or symbols might have been found.

In a statement, the university condemned the antisemitic messages, saying, "The offensive actions of a few should not reflect on the vast majority of protesters who were there to peacefully express their views, but there is no place for any antisemitic message, behavior or action at the University of Maryland."

New York Police Charge Female Teen with Hate Crime Following Theft of Israeli Flag

A 19-year-old has been arrested in Rockland County for stealing an Israeli flag.

Haverstraw police say 19-year-old Mary Cordero, of Spring Valley, is accused of stealing the flag in Pomona.

She's been charged with petit larceny as a hate crime.

Police Capt. John Gould told News 12 in police interviews with the suspect that it became clear the flag was stolen because of the owners' faith.

Police say Cordero was released on an appearance ticket due to legislative restrictions and will be due in court later.

Gould said this is the first hate crime he knows of in Haverstraw since the war broke out in Israel.

State crime statistics show 16 hate crimes were committed in Rockland County last year, which was double the amount from 2021.

Antisemitic Attacks Rock Multiple Jewish Schools in Canada as Gunmen Open Fire

The Montreal Jewish community was shocked Thursday morning when news broke of a gunman firing into the buildings of two Jewish institutions in the middle of the night.

At around 4:30 a.m., shots were fired at Yeshiva Gedolah of Montreal. The suspect is seen on surveillance footage wielding a handgun. The outside of the building has a protective, bullet proof film, but the gunman shot through the metal door, reaching around 40 feet inside the building and hitting a marble wall.

The incident occurred while students were sleeping in the dormitory.

Not long after the first incident, shots were fired at Herzilia Talmud Torah Elementary school, about 10 minutes away from Yeshiva Gedolah by car.

B’chasdei Hashem, no injuries were reported from either incidents.

“There is no reason for panic,” Menahel of Yeshiva Gedolah Rabbi Menachem M. Karmel said in a letter to the school’s community. “We have alerted the police, Shomrim, the Federation and all other applicable parties, who are exercising their fullest power to deal with this situation. We are focusing all our efforts on ensuring that a plan is set into place for the continued safety and security of our talmidim and staff.”

The shootings follow an attempted arson on a Montreal shul and daycare center on Monday, where Molotov cocktails were thrown at the buildings, causing minor damage but no injuries, baruch Hashem. Congregation Beth Tikvah Ahavat Shalom Nusach Hoari and the nearby Federation CJA buildings were targeted.

The fire department arrived to extinguish one fire that was still smoldering; the other apparently went out on its own.

Police are investigating the incidents.

New York Authorities Track Down Antisemitic Assailant who Spat on Jewish Woman

A suspect has been arrested in connection with a Sunday hate crime with the help of Rockland Chaverim.

Tuesday night, members of Chaverim saw a man fitting the description of the suspect, who allegedly spat on a young Jewish woman and hurled antisemitic epithets ar her.

He was spotted at the Walgreens located at the intersection of Routes 45 and 59 at around 9:08 p.m., and was allegedly harassing other people. Chaverim members alerted police, who arrested him shortly after.

The Jewish community is on high alert following the October 7 massacre, as antisemitic incidents and threats nationwide have increased exponentially ever since.

New Jersey Synagogue Deface with Antisemitic Graffiti

Police in a Middlesex County town are trying to find whoever spray-painted antisemitic graffiti on a Jewish temple late Wednesday or early Thursday.

Firefighters in Monroe have already washed the messages from Congregation Etz Chaim - Monroe Township Jewish Center on Cornell Avenue to make them unreadable, Mayor Stephen Dalina said Thursday afternoon.

The vandalism is believed to have been committed by juveniles, Monroe police told the mayor. Two of the messages were written on reflective tape, the mayor added.

In a statement, the congregation described the messages as “repulsive.”

Police on patrol discovered the graffiti at about 1 a.m Thursday and notified leaders of the congregation.

“The climate of antisemitism and xenophobia are extremely high right now,” Congregation Etz Chaim said. “From college campuses, synagogues and online, we are facing a new wave of incidents and we must remain vigilant of acts of bias and hate.”

The mayor condemned those responsible.

“This is a raw time; the world is very small at the moment,” Dalina said. “Again, we must proclaim that any offensive/hateful vandalism is completely unacceptable in our community.”

US Lawmaker's Office Repeatedly Defaced with Pro-Hamas Messaging

A Texas lawmaker's office was repeatedly vandalized this week with messages criticizing the congress member's position on the Israel-Hamas war.

U.S. Rep. Monica De La Cruz said on Thursday police are investigating what she described in a press release as pro-Hamas messages scrawled on her District 15 office in McAllen, Texas.

The vandals wrote on her door, entryway, and sheets left outside the office, "Monica murders," "Israel kills Jews too," "Israel is doing genocide and you support it," and "You can't escape your crimes Monica."

De La Cruz believes she was targeted because her South Texas district has a "small but vibrant Jewish community," of which she counts herself as an ally, she said.

"My support for Israel and the Jewish community is, always has been, and always will be unwavering," De La Cruz said. "I make no apologies for standing firmly against anti-Semitism. These vandals will not intimidate or silence me."

The war in Israel and Gaza, spurred by a surprise Hamas attack last month, has already claimed the lives of thousands, including numerous civilians killed on the Oct. 7 attack.

On Thursday, the White House announced that Israel has agreed to four-hour daily humanitarian pauses in the fighting.

Pro-Hamas Supporters Violently Attack Jews During Video Screening at Los Angeles Holocaust Museum

Altercations between pro-Israeli and pro-Palestinian supporters were captured on video outside a film screening at the Museum of Tolerance in West Los Angeles Wednesday night.

The film, Bearing Witness, featured gruesome unedited footage of the Oct. 7 Hamas attack on Israeli civilians near the Gaza border that Israel says left more than 1,400 people dead.

The 47-minute video was provided by Israeli Defence Forces and shown to select audiences in Los Angeles and New York.

Actress Gal Gadot, who is Israeli and a former IDF service member, was purportedly involved in organizing the screenings.

“Over 240 hostages, including 30 children, are still being held captive by Hamas. This is a prayer from Broadway to bring them home,” Gadot posted on her Instagram page Wednesday night.

According to the Los Angeles Times, about 150 people attended the Los Angeles screening, although Gadot was not in attendance.

Demonstrators carrying Israeli and Palestinian flags lined both sides of the streets outside the museum, which emphasizes the history of the Holocaust. Fights erupted where people could be seen exchanging punches and kicking cars that were driving through an intersection.

“Two reports for battery were taken and will be thoroughly investigated,” LAPD said in a statement on Thursday. “At this time, we do not have suspects in custody relating to the battery, or for any other reason relating to this event.”

Woman Charged with Antisemitic Hate Crime as LAPD Investigates Vehicle Ramming into Local Synagogue

A woman faces a hate crime charge after she crashed her car through the gate of a Tarzana synagogue.

Tikvah Mottahdeh, 54, rammed her vehicle into the gates of ERETZ Synagogue & Cultural Center, located in the 6100 block of Wilbur Avenue, early Thursday morning, according to Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Officer Moran.

Mottahdeh was arrested at around 2:10 a.m. and faces a charge of hate crime vandalism at a house of worship, Moran said.

Footage from the scene showed the broken gate lying in the synagogue’s driveway.

It is unknown if the synagogue structure sustained any damage.

New Hampshire Police Seek Public Assistance After Israeli Flag Stolen from Local Truck

Police are seeking the public’s help in the investigation into the theft of an Israeli flag over the weekend, while it was being displayed on a truck parked on Winnacunnet Road.

Hampton police Capt. Anthony Azarian said about a week after Hamas terrorists attacked Israel, former selectman Phil Bean draped both an American flag and the white and blue Israeli flag over the side of his 1987 green Dodge pick-up truck. The vehicle was parked in front of the Hampton Fire Department, across and up the street from Bean’s insurance agency.

Sometime between Friday night, Nov. 3, and before 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Nov 4, the Israeli flag disappeared, and Bean reported the incident to Hampton police, Azarian said.

“In Mr. Bean’s statement to us when making the incident report, he mentioned his belief that this was a hate crime,” Azarian said.

Azarian said no witnesses have come forward, but police are hoping there could be surveillance footage available that may help with the investigation.

“We are continuing to proactively locate any surveillance footage that may have captured the incident in an effort to establish any investigative leads regarding the identity of any person or persons of interest,” Azarian said. “We encourage anyone with any video evidence from security cameras, ring cameras, et cetera, or with any other information that may assist us in identifying the responsible party to share this information with us.”

Boston University's Hillel Chapter Vandalized with Anti-Israel Graffiti

The Boston University Police Department and the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office are investigating a possible hate crime on Boston University’s campus, after someone wrote “Free Palestine” on the window of BU Hillel Tuesday evening.

Because the Florence & Chafetz Hillel House at Boston University is a house of worship that holds regular religious services, as well as a community center and a building associated with an educational facility, the vandalism may rise to the level of a hate crime, a DA spokesperson said. It’s the location of the graffiti, not necessarily the language used, that would qualify it under the law, the spokesperson said.

“This defacement was a targeted act and we will work closely with BU police to identify, arrest, and prosecute the person responsible,” the spokesperson said in a statement. “Our message is clear: hate crimes in any form are intolerable and anyone charged with committing them will pay the consequences.”

Robert Lowe, chief of the BU Police Department, says that police officers received a call just before 5 pm Tuesday evening from staff members at Hillel House on Bay State Road, who told them that “an unknown person had tagged an exterior window of the building.”

Police arrived to find the words “Free Palestine” written on the window with what appeared to be a permanent marker, Lowe says. The graffiti overlaid a blue and white sign that was posted inside the window, designed to replicate the Israeli flag, that reads, “We Stand with Israel.” The writing was removed by employees from BU’s Facilities Management & Operations Wednesday morning.

It’s unknown if the graffiti was committed by a person with any affiliation to BU. “Separately from any action taken by local authorities,” Jason Campbell-Foster, BU dean of students, says, “if a student is determined to be responsible for this act, they will be held accountable under University procedures.”

Kenneth Freeman, BU president ad interim, credits the BUPD and the Suffolk County DA’s Office for their prompt action and the seriousness with which they took the incident. “We will not tolerate violence, threats directed at individuals, or acts that constitute hate crimes,” Freeman says. “And we will take all possible measures to keep our campus safe. Our public safety team is working with the Suffolk County District Attorney on the investigation; we are grateful for the timely response.”

Massachusetts Starbucks Defaced with Anti-Israel Graffiti

Rabbi Shmulik Fogelman went to the Starbucks at 11 East Central St. Wednesday afternoon, not for coffee but to get a firsthand look at what he considers Jewish hatred.

Fogelman, the president of the Chabad of UMass Medical School, examined the acts of vandalism that had taken place at the Starbucks across from the main post office.

Police are investigating what they have termed "a vandalism and hate crime."

The locked front door had the words “Fre (sic) Palestine” in white spray paint.

Spray-painted on the drive-thru three-tier ordering menu, the drive-thru pickup window and a side brick wall were the words “Free Gaza.”

Scrawled in white spray paint on three side windows and covering the Starbucks logo were the words, "You make drinks 4 genocide." There was also a symbol of an “A” in a circle on the glass and this symbol is repeated in the smashed drive-thru ordering speaker screen.

Notes taped on the front door, drive-thru window and the smashed and spray-painted drive-thru screen all had the same message: “OUR STORE IS TEMPORARILY CLOSED. Please accept our apologies for any inconvenience. We are working to reopen our store as quickly as possible.” (Update: the coffee shop reopened Thursday morning.)

“We can’t let people who do acts of terror roam around," Fogelman said, standing outside the vandalized coffee shop. "They must be caught. They must be put in prison. And it can’t be abided.”

Police learned of the spray-painted words about 4:30 a.m. Wednesday. In the late afternoon, a worker was cleaning the exterior of the building.

Detectives have released a surveillance camera image of a person considered a suspect. Anyone with information is asked to contact investigators at (508) 799-8651.

“Vandalism of any property, private or public, is never acceptable and will not be tolerated,” City Manager Eric D. Batista said.

Fogelman said, “Smashing into Starbucks and stealing things is one thing. That’s not what happened here. There are signs all over the place that are really supporting Hamas terrorists, supporting the murder of innocent people, supporting the beheading and burning of babies, and this is what it is. This is a part of that."

Canadian Man Arrested for Antisemitic Online Threats Against Jewish Organizations

We have charged one man in relation to online threats made to two community organizations last week.

On Sunday, Oct. 29, 2023, we received reports of multiple online threats made via social media to two Jewish community organizations in Calgary. After investigation, it is alleged that the social media user created and sent the threats under a fraudulent name. The investigation uncovered the owner of the social media account and determined the owner’s location to be in Calgary. On Tuesday, Nov. 7, 2023, one man was arrested and charged.

Mohamad Ghandour, 25, of Calgary, has been charged with three counts of uttering threats. He will next appear in court Wednesday, Dec. 6, 2023.

Hate motivation is being investigated as a factor.

“We understand that recent events that have taken place locally in relation to international conflicts have deeply affected Calgarians’ sense of safety across their city,” says Insp. Keith Hurley of the Calgary Police Service. “We want to reassure all affected communities that we take every reported incident seriously, and we remain committed to keeping everyone safe.

“Any threats to individuals or communities, whether online or in person, are fully investigated by the Calgary Police Service (CPS),” says Insp. Hurley. “We understand the impact these threats have to Calgarians’ sense of safety in their city and will work diligently to hold people accountable for their actions.”

We maintain that the CPS polices behaviours and not beliefs. We will not tolerate criminal behaviour and are working closely with our community partners to ensure they have our support as we work together to keep Calgary safe.

NYPD Charge Man for Physically and Verbally Assaulting Jewish Family

A Brooklyn man has been arrested and charged with a hate crime for allegedly throwing a bottle at a Jewish mother with her children while making antisemitic statements.

The incident occurred on Friday, October 13, shortly before 6 p.m., on Webster Avenue near 47th Street in Kensington. Surveillance footage obtained by Shomrim shows a 26-year-old mother crossing the street with two small children walking alongside her, and they prepare to enter a Lyft minivan. An SUV then pulls up near the Lyft and stops.

The SUV driver allegedly yelled, “Dirty Jew, why don’t you hold your kid’s hand?” and threw an empty water bottle and wrappers at the mother.

The Lyft driver threw the bottle back at the SUV. The SUV driver then emerged from his vehicle, and a scuffle broke out between the SUV driver and the Lyft driver, with the SUV driver throwing a garbage can at the Lyft driver, who then picked up the garbage can to defend himself.

On Tuesday, police arrested Sean Hampden, 39, of Sunset Park. He was charged with two counts of aggravated harassment, one as a hate crime.

Jewish Nonprofit Faces Ongoing Antisemitic Attacks as Signage is Defaced Multiple Times

A national billboard campaign meant to focus public attention on antisemitism continues to run into trouble in the Bay Area.

Two billboards in Oakland — hot-pink signs stretching close to 50 feet across and looming above major thoroughfares — were defaced over the weekend.

One of the targeted billboards originally said, “Can a billboard end antisemitism? No. But you’re not a billboard.” The other said, “Cultural Jews died in the gas chambers too. Speak up.”

Neither mentions anything about Israelis, Palestinians or Zionism but were tagged with messages in support of Palestine.

Photos shared with J. show that someone spray-painted “Free Palestine” in bubble letters dripping with red drops, obscuring the last sentence of the message on the first billboard. On the second, someone painted the word “Palestine” over the word “Jews.”

The incidents bring the total number of antisemitism-awareness billboards defaced this year in the Bay Area to five, according to JewBelong, the New Jersey-based nonprofit running the campaign. The pattern is unique to the Bay Area, the organization said.

JewBelong, founded six years ago, has run more than 400 billboards across the country, according to the organization.

“The mere fact that we are taking a stand against antisemitism enrages the haters,” JewBelong co-founder Archie Gottesman said in a statement.

In a Nov. 5 blog post, someone using the handle “sandgazing” appeared to take credit for the “Free Palestine” bubble letters in Oakland. The blog post, which showed a photo of the defaced banner, was titled “Artists for Palestine ‘Fix’ Israeli Propaganda Billboard in Oakland.” It appeared on Indybay, a “non-commercial, democratic collective of Bay Area independent media makers,” according to the site’s “about us” page.

“We express unwavering solidarity with the people of Palestine in their struggle against israeli zionism [sic] and western colonialism,” the post said. “The recent appearance of ‘JewBelong’ billboards in our midst is deeply troubling. Cloaked in the guise of civil rights, these billboards are, in reality, instruments of fear and manipulation.”

The incident was reported to local police, who did not immediately respond to a J. request for comment.

The vandalism coincides with a spike in hate crimes against Jews across the U.S. since the Hamas terrorist attack on Oct. 7 and the subsequent war in Gaza and Israel, according to the Anti-Defamation League.

It also comes as Jewish communities in the Bay Area grapple with frustration, alienation and sometimes fear surrounding what many Jews see as tone-deaf expressions of support for Palestinians without regard for Israelis and Jews following Oct. 7.

Last month, the Richmond City Council approved a resolution that affirmed the city’s “support and solidarity with the Palestinian people of Gaza,” a measure whose initial draft failed to mention the Oct. 7 attack. In Oakland, the teachers union passed a resolution on Monday encouraging its members “to become involved in the growing anti-apartheid movement demanding freedom for Palestine.”

Troubling graffiti has also proliferated around the region.

Last month, someone wrote “Gaza is a concentration camp” and “Support Al Aqsa Flood” — the name of the Oct. 7 massacre of more than 1,400 people in Israel, the majority civilians — on a JewBelong billboard in Berkeley. In downtown San Francisco, “kill a settler” and “death to Zionism” were scrawled on a bank during a pro-Palestine protest.

NYPD Launches Manhunt for Antisemitic Attacker Who Assaulted Jewish Man

A hate-spewing man who assaulted a Jew on the streets of Crown Heights Wednesday got away for now, but the NYPD is after him.

The incident took place Wednesday as a Jewish man was riding his bike on Sullivan Pl in Crown Heights when he was approached by a male who stopped him and began cursing him as a Jew. As the Jewish man attempted to leave he was hit across the back with a large umbrella by his attacker.

The hate-spewing attacker then took off on foot to Montgomery Street with the Jewish man following as he called Crown Heights Shomrim and 911. The Jewish man followed his attacker until he entered a project building where he lost sight of him.

Shomrim and the police arrived quickly and were able to retrieve photos and video of the man. The incident was easily identified as having an aspect of a hate crime and may be investigated as one.
